Day 100 of the 365 to 40 project. Recently we started Operation Grow Ya Bastards otherwise known as taking the currently mostly barren crappy dust bowl that is our side yard and converting it into a proper garden. The first major part of this was planting a feature tree to provide shade during the summer. After going through a few contenders we settled on planting a quince tree. Why a quince tree? It grows to the height we want, provides shade in summer, drops its leaves in the winter to let the sun heat the house and of course it grows fruit. Whether we eat the fruit is not of any super importance but it does help encourage insects and birds in the garden.

We now have a semi-mature quince tree planted and this sarlac pit looking thing is in fact the ex flower end of a small but thriving quince fruit.
